The Northern Stakeholders Consultative Initiative (NSCI) has released a statement addressing recent criticism of Minister of State for Defense Mohammad Bello Matawalle and recommending his continued appointment in the federal cabinet.
The organization’s Convener, Yerima Shettima, issued the statement noting an increase in negative commentary concerning the minister following the departure of former Minister of Defence Mohammed Badaru Abubakar. The NSCI has attributed this criticism to political opposition seeking to diminish the administration’s northern support base in advance of the 2027 elections.
The group cited Matawalle’s work on security initiatives and peace-building efforts in northern communities during his tenure at the Ministry of State for Defense. Shettima indicated that the minister’s security-related contributions have received acknowledgment across the region.
The NSCI contends that the criticism directed at Matawalle represents an effort to generate discord within the administration and erode presidential support in the North. According to the organization, the minister’s dismissal could adversely affect stability and relations between the federal government and northern communities.
The statement described the attacks as politically driven rather than motivated by regional or national concerns, noting Matawalle’s consistent alignment with the administration’s objectives.
The organization has called on President Tinubu to disregard the criticism and maintain the minister’s appointment. Additionally, the NSCI urged journalists and citizens to verify information prior to dissemination to prevent amplification of unverified claims regarding government officials.
Citing the approaching electoral period, Shettima stressed the importance of unity and cautioned against divisive tactics. He noted that regional strength depends on cohesive action among stakeholders.
The NSCI reaffirmed its support for the President’s agenda and expressed commitment to national interests and administrative continuity.
