President Bola Tinubu has approved new conduct guidelines for Nigeria’s military personnel, prohibiting them from engaging in homosexuality, lesbianism, bestiality, cross-dressing, and other activities deemed contrary to the ethics of the armed forces as reported by Punch.
This directive, detailed in Section 26 of the revised Harmonised Armed Forces Terms and Conditions of Service, was signed into law on December 16, 2024. The document outlines strict behavioral standards for military personnel both on and off duty.
According to the revised guidelines, officers are explicitly forbidden from engaging in LGBTQIA2S+ activities, body piercing, tattooing, and disorderly behavior. Additionally, drunkenness at any time, whether on or off duty, is now a punishable offense.
The document further prohibits officers from forming amorous relationships with subordinates or their spouses, joining secret societies or political parties, and failing to meet financial obligations like vehicle licenses and insurance payments. Misuse of government property, involvement in private business ventures, and accepting gifts from junior officers are also outlawed.
The condition of service states: “An officer must not at any time be drunk whether on or off duty. An officer shall not engage in private business or use government property for personal gain. He must avoid any behavior that brings discredit to the service.”
While the document outlines stringent prohibitions, it does not specify the disciplinary measures or punishments for violations.
The revised guidelines reflect the Nigerian Armed Forces’ commitment to upholding discipline, professionalism, and ethical standards, as well as ensuring that personnel maintain a positive public image.
