Abuja, July 30, 2024— The Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Hon. Christopher Zakka, has called on the stakeholders of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and leaders of various civil society organizations in the Federal Capital Territory to abandon the planned protest scheduled for August 1st.
Addressing a gathering of NANS stakeholders and civil society leaders, Hon. Christopher emphasized the importance of dialogue as the most effective means to resolve grievances and foster peace. He highlighted that while the right to protest is fundamental, it is crucial to consider the broader impact on public safety and community stability.
“The planned protest, though rooted in genuine concerns, poses a risk of escalating tensions and disrupting public order. It is imperative that we explore all avenues of dialogue and constructive engagement to address these issues,” Hon. Christopher stated.
He urged the student body and civil society leaders to channel their concerns through established communication channels with government representatives. He assured them that their voices would be heard and that the administration is committed to addressing their issues with transparency and accountability.
“We recognize the vital role that students and civil society organizations play in our democracy. Your concerns are valid, and we are ready to listen and work together to find sustainable solutions. Let us prioritize dialogue over confrontation,” he added.
The AMAC Chairman also reassured the audience of the council’s dedication to improving the socio-economic conditions in the territory and ensuring that the concerns of all stakeholders are addressed in a fair and just manner.
The meeting concluded with a resolution to form a committee comprising representatives from NANS, civil society organizations, and the AMAC administration to facilitate ongoing dialogue and monitor the implementation of agreed-upon solutions.
The appeal from Hon. Christopher comes at a critical time, urging all parties to work collaboratively towards peace and development in the Federal Capital Territory.
